The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has resumed after a 10-day break due to security concerns. Although the post-break match schedule was altered due to the break, the season will resume with the one game whose date and time have not changed.
The match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which was originally slated as Match No. 68, will now be Match No. 58. In terms of playoff qualification, RCB has one foot in the door. However, KKR have very few opportunities, and a further defeat will formally remove them from the running.
Though they were played a while ago, both teams’ most recent games were against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). RCB will play consecutive home games for the first time this season as a result of the scheduling change. In their most recent game, the second-place RCB lost to the Chennai Super Kings in Bengaluru.
Virat Kohli and Jacob Bethell got off to a fast start, but Matheesha Pathirana’s wickets caused the batting to stall. The last two overs saw Romario Shepherd smash the second-fastest IPL fifty ever, including a 33-run over against Khaleel Ahmed.
With two early powerplay wickets, RCB then solidified their lead, but a strong partnership between Ayush Mhatre and Ravindra Jadeja helped CSK rally. However, RCB stormed in when Lungi Ngidi removed both Mhatre and Dewald Brevis—the latter controversial—from the pitch in quick succession. After they recovered, RCB was able to keep better control of the proceedings through to the end.
Yash Dayal had to defend 15 runs in the final over. RCB was hoping to win after two runs and MS Dhoni’s dismissal off the first three balls. Shivam Dube, however, despatched a beamer for six after the pressure spilt. After giving up singles off the next three balls, Dayal finally collected himself, and RCB was only two runs away from victory.
However, KKR’s season took a hit when they fell to CSK in Kolkata. The victory ended CSK’s tournament losing streak of four games. Noor Ahmad’s superb middle-overs bowling prevented any KKR hitter, save for Ajinkya Rahane and Andre Russell, from doing much. But CSK’s pursuit was in danger. Urvil Patel, their debutant, continued the onslaught after both of their openers were removed for ducks. Before the fielding limits were eased, Chennai crumbled and lost half of their team.
With a 30-run over off Vaibhav Arora, Dewald Brevis shifted the tide of the match, even though KKR was actually ahead. After that, it was easy since MS Dhoni saw the chase through in the final over, even though he lost more wickets.
In other developments, Moeen Ali will not be playing for KKR, but the majority of RCB’s foreign players have returned from vacation.
