This season, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has continued to hold double headers on Saturdays, as it has in the past. Cricket fans were intrigued when they discovered that there was only one match scheduled for this Saturday, April 26, and it was between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Eden Gardens.
Matches are typically played back-to-back on both Saturdays and Sundays during IPL weekends.
In addition to providing the public with nonstop cricket excitement, these weekend matches boost the broadcasters’ viewership. However, taking a different tack, IPL 2025 will only have one match starting on Saturday.
An earlier game this season between the KKR and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) was rescheduled from Sunday, April 6, to Tuesday, April 8. In order to ensure seamless handling of public activities and gatherings, the local authorities notified the IPL Governing Council to move the game owing to the Ram Navami celebrations in Kolkata.
This change to the game interrupted the IPL 2025 timetable, prompting a change to the match calendar to allow the teams the necessary downtime and avoid weekend overload. For the remainder of the tournament, Saturdays will only be used for one match due to operational needs and the need to provide teams the time they need to recover between matches.
Even while Saturdays will now only have one match per day, Sundays will still be doubleheaders, giving cricket fans all-night cricket activity. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also attempted to cut back on afternoon matches because of the extreme heat that was affecting most of the nation. This element may have an impact on the performance and skill of the players as well as the spectator attendance for afternoon games.
Reducing doubleheaders will assist to lower the danger of injuries, which will improve the teams’ performance as the season goes on. Player management will also become increasingly important.
