Is Rishabh Pant’s white-ball career over?

Rishabh Pant, a left-handed hitter, has been in the spotlight since the early phases of his cricket career. He is noted for his aggressive stroke play and game-changing knocks and was previously regarded as an important member of India’s white-ball squad. However, his recent performances have prompted questions regarding his role in limited-overs formats, particularly following a disastrous Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.

Pant made news during the IPL 2025 mega auction after being bought by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a hefty INR 27 crore. The franchise also gave him leadership responsibilities, believing he would lead from the front. Pant, however, fell short of expectations as a player and captain. He scored only 151 runs in 12 innings, suffering with shot selection and consistency. Under the youngster’s guidance, LSG failed to qualify for the playoffs and were eliminated following a loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In T20 Internationals, he averages 23.25 and has 1,209 runs from 66 innings. In One-Day Internationals, he has 871 runs in 27 innings. Despite a few impactful innings, his overall performance in shorter forms has been erratic. Pant, on the other hand, has had an outstanding Test career. He averages 42.11 in the red-ball format and has performed admirably in difficult situations abroad.

The Haridwar-born cricketer was a member of the Indian squad that won the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States, as well as the ICC 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai. The next T20 World Cup is in 2026, and given Pant’s previous track record, selectors may be inclined to look past him for white-ball cricket.

Given his disappointing IPL season and poor white-ball record, Pant’s future in India’s limited-overs setup is uncertain. Despite his continued prominence in Test cricket, his days in the white-ball game may be coming to an end unless he makes a strong recovery.
