During the current Day 1 of the fourth Test against England, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s bat handle joint fractured due to a shattering ball from Chris Woakes. The hosts won the toss and chose to field first, with generally overcast conditions in the first hour of play with similar scenes forecast for the rest of the Test.
In the ninth over, Woakes produced a decent length delivery on the fifth ball. The right-arm pacer’s delivery snuck back in with extra bounce, crushing the bat’s joint and breaking the handle as Jaiswal guarded the ball.
Jaiswal had to be cautious against the new ball because the bounce of the deliveries fluctuates constantly and neither of the openers could foresee them.
The left-handed batter signalled for a new bat, and Karun Nair came out with the other bats.

Speaking about the match, the first hour of the play was a testing field for the visitors as they tried their best not to nick anything from their bat. Both batters were watchful in the initial overs, and scored runs mostly on loose deliveries. Jaiswal came into the contest on the back of twin failures at Lord’s, and will aim to bounce back in Manchester.
Batting first, they scored 78 runs in 26 overs on the first day at Lunch in the fourth Test, holding the crease calmly and not taking any risks to score runs. KL Rahul looked more assured and handled the tough balls with ease. The Old Trafford pitch had good seam movement and some extra bounce occasionally, with the conditions not being absolutely easy to bat.
3 changes for Indians in do-or-die game
The visitors had a big shuffle in their playing XI for the fourth Test as multiple players sustained injuries, forcing them to drop from the clash. The Karnal-born cricketer Anshul Kamboj received his maiden cap for the Baggy Blues, replacing Akash Deep. Shardul Thakur and Sai Sudharsan were also brought in to replace Nitish Kumar Reddy and Karun Nair, respectively.
England, on the other hand, brought in Liam Dawson after eight years to their Test setup. The left-arm spinner replaces Shoaib Bashir in the XI, who sustained an injury in his hand during the Lord’s Test.
