West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder has been selected captain of the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots for the 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which begins on August 15. This transfer marks a huge departure for Holder, who has been with the Barbados Royals for 13 years, beginning with the CPL’s first season in 2013.
Jason Holder leaves the Barbados Royals with a good record of 1169 runs and 97 wickets in 104 games.
He has guided the team to two CPL victories (in 2014 and 2019), captaining them during the latter win. Holder, known for his calm and steady leadership on the field, is viewed as a fresh start for the Patriots, who struggled last season, winning only one of ten games. With Holder in control, the franchise will look to rebuild around his experience and leadership abilities.
The squad also includes emerging star Alick Athanaze, who had previously only played for the Barbados Royals in 2023 and 2024. Athanaze, who made his international debut in 2023, has appeared in 19 CPL matches, scoring 344 runs with an average of 22.93 and a strike rate of 106.83, including one half-century.
Sherfane Rutherford will be playing for his third CPL franchise this season. Rutherford has spent the last four seasons with the Patriots and formerly played with the Guyana Amazon Warriors from 2018 to 2020.
Their batting lineup also boasts firepower from established players like Evin Lewis, Kyle Mayers, and Rilee Rossouw, who remain integral to the team’s plans.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots will kick off their 2025 campaign against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons at Warner Park, Basseterre. Meanwhile, the St Lucia Kings enter the tournament as the defending champions. Holder’s presence in the middle order and seam attack is expected to add much-needed balance and tactical stability as the Patriots aim to turn their fortunes around.
