India has received a major boost ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup in Dubai, as the talismanic Jasprit Bumrah has allegedly proclaimed his availability for the flagship event. The tournament, which will be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28, will be played in the T20 format. The selectors are scheduled to gather in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 19 to announce the squad. Bumrah has notified them that he is fit and raring to play in the continental event.
Jasprit Bumrah recently played in India’s five-match Test series against England in the United Kingdom.
However, the Gujarat seamer only played three Tests because the management wanted to avoid overuse and preserve him fit for future assignments.
“Bumrah has informed the selectors that he will be available for the Asia Cup selection.” India Today quoted a source as stating that the selection committee will meet next week to consider the matter.
Interestingly, Bumrah hasn’t played white-ball cricket for the Men in Blue since the 2024 T20 World Cup. He played an important role in India’s victory at the global competition. The Ahmedabad native was crowned Player of the Tournament after taking 15 wickets in eight matches at a staggering average of 8.27. His economy rate was a staggering 4.18.
Bumrah appeared in good form during the Test series against England, taking 14 wickets from three matches at an average of 26. However, India lost all three of Bumrah’s matches in the series.
The 31-year-old has also faced criticism from certain fans and experts for boycotting the fifth Test at The Oval in London. This was a vital game for India since they needed to win to tie the series and prevent England from winning the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. In Bumrah’s absence, Mohammed Siraj stepped up and bowled a magnificent spell in the fourth innings, helping the Asian giants triumph by six runs.
India will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on September 10 against the UAE in Dubai. The Suryakumar Yadav-led side will play its next two matches against Pakistan and Oman on September 14 and 19, respectively.
