Jasprit Bumrah once again demonstrated his ability with the red ball, taking five wickets to add his name to the Lord’s Honours Board. On Day 2 of the third Test between India and England, the pacer concluded with 5/74, bowling out the hosts for 387 in the first innings. Despite the milestone, the bowler had a low-key reaction after taking the fifth wicket.
Bumrah’s fifteenth Test wicket, and his first at Lord’s, saw him break Jofra Archer‘s stumps. However, there was no loud rejoicing. Bumrah addressed the reporters after the event and explained why there was no celebration.
“The truth is, I was tired. There was no happiness element. I bowled for a long time on the pitch, and I occasionally get tired. I’m not 21-22 anymore, so I’ll jump around. I am generally not like that. I was pleased that I had contributed. Aside from that, I just wanted to return to my mark and bowl the next ball,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the 31-year-old was rested for the previous Test at Edgbaston due to workload concerns, and his return to the XI immediately aided India. His session on the second day morning put the visitors in a good starting position, as he quickly dispatched Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes.
You will always be judged by your performances day in and day out: Jasprit Bumrah
He later completed his five-wicket haul by removing Archer, surpassing Kapil Dev’s record of most overseas fifers by an Indian bowler. However, a late fightback from England’s lower order by Jamie Smith (51) and Brydon Carse (56) helped the hosts post 387. The speedster also addressed the attention around his workload and selection.
“It’s good to be on the Honours board, but I know that discussions will keep happening. There are so many cameras here. Even when we practice, there are so many cameras. This is the era of views, subscribers. I know that everyone wants to create something sensational. Things happen, but it’s not in my hands. Log paise kama rahe hai mere through toh achi baat hai.
At least they will give me blessings that I gave them viewership. But I don’t think about all those things. You will be judged as long as you are wearing this jersey. Every cricketer goes through that. As long as I am on TV, judgments will keep coming. Obviously, that’s part and parcel of professional sport. You will always be judged by your performances day in and day out. Sachin sir played 200 Test matches, and he was also still judged. So everybody judges. That’s how it is,” added Bumrah.
India ended Day 2 at 145/3, trailing by 242 runs with KL Rahul remaining unbeaten on 53, and Rishabh Pant on 19 not out. While Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early to Archer, Karun Nair played a knock of 40 before Joe Root pulled off a stunner in the slips.
