Jasprit Bumrah has been the most effective bowler in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 by a wide margin. With an incredible average of 10.90 and 21 wickets from three games, the right-arm seamer is the top wicket-taker. Not a single other bowler has managed to claim more than 14 wickets.
In terms of his ability to quickly evaluate opposition batsmen and the available conditions,
former India head coach Ravi Shastri likened Jasprit Bumrah to the renowned West Indies speedster Malcolm Marshall.
He has a great understanding of the game, especially when it comes to batsmen. Malcolm Marshall, who could assess batsmen’s strengths and weaknesses and suss out situations, seemed to me to be the best bowler I faced. I believe Bumrah falls into that group. He picks up on a player’s strengths and shortcomings so quickly,” Ravi Shastri told Fox Cricket.
“He has taken nearly 200 wickets and nearly 100 in India, and he did so at the age of 17.” Because of the difficult conditions, you have to know that the ball starts to reverse in India. Consequently, he poses a threat if he fails to claim wickets with the new ball,” he continued.
He is at the top of his game, thus there is no break: Ravi Shastri
When Bumrah surpassed Kapil Dev’s record of 51 Down Under in the longest format during the Brisbane Test, he became the top wicket-taker for India in Australia. He has taken 53 wickets in 10 Test matches played in Australia so far. The MCG, which Bumrah has found to be a pleasant hunting ground, will host the fourth Test.
After torturing Nathan McSweeney in the first three Test matches, the 31-year-old was replaced by Sam Konstas, a teenager. As he prepares to take on an in-form Bumrah, Shastri anticipates that the young player will have an uphill battle.
“He enjoys bowling at the MCG, so Bumrah is up for the challenge. He completely destroyed Australia with his six-wicket haul when I was a coach,” Shastri said.
In Australia, he simply gets wickets for enjoyment when he’s in that kind of form. It is absurd. There’s no break since he’s at the top of his game and his usage of the new ball makes it hard for other batters to score runs. He’s just unrelenting; he seams it both ways and swings it,” he continued.
