One year ago today (June 9) at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, India’s ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah bowled an outstanding session against archrivals Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Pakistan won the toss and decided to field first. The Men in Green put on a clinical bowling performance, limiting India to 119 runs. While all of India’s batters left quickly, only Rishabh Pant managed to battle back with 42 off 31 balls.
In response, Pakistan’s chase started impressively. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam began carefully, reaching 26 without loss until Bumrah grabbed the first blood, eliminating Babar for 13. Despite losing Usman Khan and Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan remained in the game at 80 for 3, requiring only 40 runs from 36 deliveries with seven wickets in hand.
Jasprit Bumrah outstanding bowling helped India to a thrilling victory over Pakistan.
The right-arm bowler transformed the game in the 15th over when he clean bowled Rizwan. The dismissal occurred when the delivery appeared full enough to drive but remained low, misleading the batter entirely. The wicket set off a collapse in which Pakistan lost their remaining wickets for just 33 runs. Bumrah’s 3/14 statistics were the game changer in the low-scoring thriller. In his four-over performance, he delivered 15 dot balls to put pressure on the opposition.
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya‘s vital breakthroughs took out the dangerous Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan, who both fell to deliveries that bounced more than expected, putting the opposition on the back foot. Notably, Axar Patel’s 18th over yielded only two runs against a left-handed batter, with the short boundary on the leg side. The team was eventually limited to 113. The successful defence of 119 runs matched the lowest total ever defended in men’s T20 World Cup history.
“It actually feels fantastic. We thought we were under par, and when the sun came out, the wicket improved little, so we had to be really disciplined. I tried to keep things simple, hit the seam as much as I could, and concentrate on my execution. It felt like we were in India, and the cheers were really welcomed. We were quite pleased with the help we received; it gave us a lot of enthusiasm. Maintain your focus in the present moment. We played two games of extremely good cricket. “We’ll stick to our processes and give it our all,” Bumrah stated in the post-match interview.
