Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s head coach, stated that he and the team did not want to burden themselves after losing by 83 runs to Bangladesh in the second T20I of the three-match series, and were focused on correcting their weaknesses in the series-deciding game.
Jayasuriya admitted that the team made a number of mistakes in the second match and expressed confidence that his side would produce in the series finale. With the forthcoming game on Wednesday, he is certain that his guys will know what to do to bear the pressure and overcome the loss.
“I do not want to be under constant pressure. This is too much. Nobody wants to be under such pressure. It is a challenge. It is a part of cricket. We made mistakes [in the last game]. We need to recover, and it’s simple. Players understand where we went wrong. A large crowd will gather here to see the game. The cricket-loving audience trusts us, and that is crucial. “Everyone knows what to do, and hopefully they will handle the pressure,” he remarked, as reported by India Today.
Whoever gets set needs to bat well. Sanath Jayasuriya
The 1996 World Cup winner explained where the hosts went wrong in the previous encounter and elaborated on the message delivered to the team members ahead of the forthcoming game. He has also requested that the batting unit produce more consistent performances, and a message has been delivered within the dressing room.
“We need to bat well and rely on the top three. The bowlers are experienced and know what they’re doing. We have a lot of seasoned guys, so whoever gets set must bat well. [In] the second T20I, we did not chase well. One of the top three players had to bat through 15 overs, which did not happen. Overall, I believe we need more consistency from the batting unit, as we have told the boys. We need to perform well in all three departments. “Players are aware of their expectations,” the former all-rounder continued.
Sri Lanka qualified for the 20-over format after winning the Test and ODI series by 1-0 and 2-1, respectively. Bangladesh smashed them in the second T20I after easily winning the first. The third match is slated for Wednesday, July 16, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
