Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott has slammed Indian skipper Shubman Gill’s attitude towards Zak Crawley during the third Test at Lord’s, describing it as ‘acting’ and setting a negative tone. Shubman chastised Crawley in the dying minutes of Day 3 because he believed the England opener was deliberately wasting time to prevent India from bowling an extra over. After being knocked out for 387, India only managed to bowl one over at England’s openers.
With only six minutes remaining, the Indians were confident of bowling two overs before Stumps, but Crawley took more than a minute to take guard when the umpires called play. Crawley then stopped Bumrah a few times throughout his run-up. Once because he wasn’t prepared, and again when he wasn’t satisfied with some activity behind the sight screen.
During the final over, Shubman used some unpleasant words, pressing Crawley to face the music rather than wasting time. After Crawley was hit on the hand and called the physio to check on him, the Indian fielders surged towards the opener. They began cheering cynically, as if he was exaggerating the situation.
Jonathan Trott was not pleased with Gill’s behaviour during the over.
He also made a veiled jab at Virat Kohli, who was known for not giving opponents a break.
“There was some gamesmanship, but I don’t think we know what happened while England was fielding or dealing it out. “I don’t like Shubman Gill’s acting,” Trott told JioHotstar.
“I just think as a captain, you set the tone. As I’ve said before, you know, pointing fingers and getting a little bit confrontational, very much like a previous captain, sort of getting in the face of the opposition. And I just don’t think that’s what it’s about. I think it sets a bad tone. And I’m up for being competitive and being tough on the field. I just think sometimes you’ve got to rise above it,” Trott said.
