On Wednesday, February 26, England captain Jos Buttler discussed his future as a captain following his team’s elimination from the Champions Trophy 2025. England’s previous losses continued as they lost to Afghanistan by a disappointing eight runs in Match No. 8 of the tournament in Lahore at the Gaddafi Stadium.
After losing to Australia by five wickets earlier, England went into the crucial match against the team captained by Hashmatullah Shahidi, but their tactics didn’t succeed. Their careless play in the previous games led to this most recent loss.
Buttler’s team lost their defense of the T20 World Cup title after failing to get to the ODI World Cup semifinals. The team recently lost to India 0–3 in a series, which gave them very little momentum going into the Champions Trophy.
Although Jos Buttler made no firm remarks on his continued captaincy or anything else, he did say that some of the options would be considered.
“At this moment, I don’t want to express any emotion. But in the post-match presentation, Buttler stated, “I think we should consider all possibilities for myself and the other guys at the top.”
Afghanistan gave England a challenging chase of 326, and although though the match was close, they were eventually bowled out in the final over, eight runs short of the mark. Joe Root, who scored a perfect 120 from 111 balls and led the team, gave optimism by smashing 11 fours and a six. But in order to advance in the match, England required more help with their batting, which was clearly lacking and ultimately cost them the match that mattered most.
“The way he handled pressure during a run chase tonight was incredible. To stay in with him and advance the game, he required one of the other top six batters.
On Saturday, March 1, the Three Lions will play their final match against Temba Bavuma‘s South Africa at Karachi’s National Stadium. A victory would be extremely beneficial for the Proteas, guaranteeing them a spot in the semi-finals, even though it is a dead rubber for the Englishmen.
