Ace spinner Keshav Maharaj of South Africa has spoken up about how spinners could be vital to the Proteas in the next T20 World Cup in 2024. Notably, the USA and the West Indies will co-host the main event. South Africa, having advanced to the 2023 ODI World Cup semifinal, will try to do better in the shortened format.
According to Maharaj, the side’s spinners will be essential. The spinners might be the ones to watch because the pitches have been getting better and the boundaries have gotten shorter.
“In the forthcoming T20 World Cup, spinners will be quite important. Boundaries are getting shorter and wickets are getting better. India Today cited Maharaj as saying, “The team really needs a spinner to provide control and variation.
“Hopefully, these T20 platforms can give spinners an even bigger role for players coming to the international stage,” he stated.
To be successful in the T20 World Cup, you need to be street smart. Keshav Maharaj
In addition, Maharaj discussed his accomplishments in the shortest format, attributing his success to his streetwiseness, which also benefited his T20 career. It is noteworthy to mention that Maharaj has represented South Africa in 27 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) to date, amassing 24 wickets while keeping up his form for the Proteas.
“To be a successful left-arm spinner in T20, you need to be street smart. Finish your assignments. Any left-arm, right-arm, or finger spinner must be complementary to one another. I would like to think that if I can teach the kids the skill of finger spin, it will inspire them to keep going and advance to a greater level in international cricket,” Maharaj stated.
