On April 6, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vs. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) game at Eden Gardens may be rescheduled for a another time or location. Because it coincides with the Ram Navami holiday, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reschedule the match.
The local authorities and Kolkata police warned that they would not be able to provide sufficient security on that day, which is what led the CAB to request a reschedule.
“We had lengthy conversations with the police and officials, and they made it apparent that even if the celebrations are a daytime event, there won’t be enough protection because of them. CAB president Snehasish Ganguly told Sportstar, “Hopefully, we will have clarity over the next couple of days. We have now requested the BCCI for a rescheduling.”
Given how full the calendar is for the entire season, the CAB’s formal plea to the BCCI seems unlikely to be granted. Another option is to relocate the game to a different location.
A BCCI source stated, “We have received a formal request from the CAB and are currently exploring the possibilities, indicating that it is in conversation with the respective teams and the logistics teams to figure out a solution.”
The same rationale led to the rescheduling of a KKR match at Eden Gardens in the 2024 IPL.
How things turn out this time is still up in the air. An alternative is being developed because of the huge demand for game tickets, according to the BCCI source. It is also possible that LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka would prefer that the game be played in Kolkata because he has business ties there.
On March 22, KKR takes on RCB to start their campaign, while LSG’s first game is against DC on March 24.
