An intriguing conversation between captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul during the first One-Day International (ODI) between India and Sri Lanka at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium on August 2, 2024, exposed the distinctions between international and IPL cricket regulations.
Veteran players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma returned to the ODI squad as Team India resumed their white-ball series against Sri Lanka. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first as the match got underway under ominous skies.
The Men in Blue had a potent squad as they took the pitch, led by KL Rahul, who replaced Rishabh Pant as wicketkeeper despite fears about injuries inside the Sri Lankan camp.
The incident in question happened in Shivam Dube’s 14th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Dube struck a length ball that was angled down the leg side on the fourth ball of the over.
The keeper recovered the ball after it seemed to make touch with the Pathum Nissanka’s thigh pad. Though Rahul and Dube thought there might have been some contact, the umpire signalled a wide.

Amidst the uncertainty, the 32-year-old was observed enquiring of Sharma regarding the potential to review the broad decision, making reference to the Indian Premier League’s regulations (IPL).
Teams are permitted to review wide and no-ball calls in the IPL. In international cricket, there isn’t a mechanism in place to review these calls. The Indian players had a brief on-field chat as a result of this disparity, during which Rahul appeared to support a review based on his IPL experience.

The island nation’s score after 30 overs was 112/5. Nissanka, the opener, left after amassing 56 runs. With one wicket apiece, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav are the visitors’ best chance to finish the Sri Lankan innings with fewer than 200 runs.
