“E sala cup namde,” which translates to “this year, the cup will be ours” in Kannada, is one of the most well-known IPL slogans that is chanted by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). But according to a new revelation by South African icon and former RCB player AB de Villiers, his teammate and renowned Indian batsman Virat Kohli advised him not to use the term at all.
The Bengaluru-based squad has one of the most devoted fan following and has set numerous franchise league records, but despite making it to three finals in the last 18 editions, they have yet to win the championship. While criticizing RCB’s 18-year title drought despite having some of the world’s best players, the former IPL cricketer was recently spotted on the Star Sports Press Room. He also disclosed why Kohli had banned him from using the slogan.
“Please just stop doing that now,” Virat told me directly after I said those remarks the other day. I thus found myself in a little difficulties. To be honest, though, I’m tired of stating that the trophy will be awarded this season. Guys, it’s the IPL, and ten elite teams have a chance to win a World Cup, let alone the IPL. “Winning this tournament is really tough,” AB de Villiers said.
Travel, various teams, various tactics, and injuries are just a few of the numerous variables that come into play. Even if a lot of things change during the season, the team who can keep up its momentum towards the end of the tournament usually wins. We see the teams that capitalize on their home advantage win. Thus, I’m hoping that this year, the 18th season, will be the one with the 18 on the back.
If that occurs, I’ll be there to collect that trophy with Virat Kohli,” the Proteas player continued.
With Rajat Patidar as their new captain, RCB has begun anew in terms of leadership. Following the departure of his predecessor, Faf Du Plessis, to join the Delhi Capitals prior to the 2025 season, the Madhya Pradesh batter will be the seventh captain to lead this team. Following his Champions League debut in 2009–10, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will also be rejoining the team for the following season.
