On Sunday, April 20, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost to longstanding rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 38 of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL) at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. With Hardik Pandya and company destroying a weak CSK team to secure a vital nine-wicket victory, the IPL El Clasico failed to live up to the expectations.
Mumbai easily defeated the total after CSK scored 176/5 in their 20 overs thanks to fifties from Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja. They did so in 15.4 overs. Rohit Sharma, who remained undefeated at 76 from 45 balls, found his form again. Suryakumar Yadav, meanwhile, scored an incredible 68 not out off 30 deliveries.
Mumbai has now won the championship three times in a row. After eight competition games, they have four wins and an equal number of losses. However, with only two victories and six losses from eight games, CSK’s chances of making the playoffs are all but gone.
The Men in Yellow’s season appears to be finished, according to former India opener and CSK supporter Kris Srikkanth, who encouraged them to show their personalities in the six games left in the schedule. The 65-year-old also praised Rohit and Suryakumar for their devastating knocks and congratulated MI on their victory. He supported the team captained by Hardik Pandya to win the competition.
“So, CSK’s season is essentially finished! Well done, MI! It was amazing to watch Rohit and Surya launch balls all around the pitch! The only recommendation left is for CSK to participate in the remaining games and express themselves! On his ‘X’ handle, Srikkanth stated, “Like I said, the @mipaltan Cup is going to lose.”

Cup to loose! #CSKvsMI— Kris Srikkanth (@KrisSrikkanth) April 20, 2025
MI strives for the playoffs, but CSK’s path becomes challenging.
CSK is now wallowing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 Points Table, while the Mumbai Indians are ranked sixth. When Mumbai plays Sunrisers Hyderabad in Uppal on April 23, they will be in action. The Sunrisers will be the opponent of CSK in their upcoming match, which is scheduled for April 25 in Chepauk.
