On Day 4 of their match against England at Old Trafford, India was in grave difficulty. With early wickets falling, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan were both bowled for ducks, but tenacity saved them. KL Rahul delivered when it counted most, leading the innings with a calm 90 and forming a crucial 188-run combination with skipper Shubman Gill.
The opener’s innings lasted 230 deliveries and was a lesson in patience. While he fell short of a century, his contribution was equally meaningful. In a cricketing society preoccupied with three-figure scores, Rahul’s 90 may have gone unnoticed, but it formed the foundation of India’s second-innings recovery.
Following the game, the right-handed batter’s old IPL team, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG),
tweeted about India’s incredible second-inning comeback. The image depicted the three centurions, Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar, with the slogan “The men who made it happen”.

However, Rahul was glaringly absent from the post, perplexing the fans. Tensions between Rahul and LSG have been simmering since Rahul’s controversial on-field altercation with team owner Sanjiv Goenka during IPL 2024. Rahul was soon released ahead of the 2025 auction and signed by the Delhi Capitals, where he performed admirably with continuous runs and form.
The tweet from LSG appeared to be a subtle dig, and fans were quick to point out that the graphic commemorating India’s fightback is incomplete without Rahul’s inclusion, as it was the 33-year-old’s resilience that provided India with a platform to survive.
Meanwhile, India and England will square off once more in the series, when they meet at the Oval in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.
