Ahead to IPL 2025, the Ahmdabad-based Torrent Group has purchased a 67% ownership stake in Gujarat Titans. The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) necessary clearance led to the deal’s completion. Since it retained a 33% ownership in the team after the transaction, CVC Capitals, the original owners of the GT franchise, will nevertheless maintain a one-third stake in the team.
At a startling price of INR 7522 crore, the purchase was completed. The new majority owner now owns INR 5035 crore, with CVC holding the remaining amount. Since the board receives 5% of each transaction inside the ownership group, BCCI is also entitled to INR 375 crore from the agreement,
After obtaining all required permits, including the board’s approval, the transaction was finalized, according to the acquirer’s press statement.
After these requirements were met, the acquisition was successfully finished. GT captain Shubman Gill wants to settle the score.
Hardik Pandya led GT to victory in their first season in 2022 and advanced to their second consecutive final in 2023, making them one of the newest teams in the lucrative league. But before the 17th edition of the major competition, Pandya returned to the Mumbai Indians, forcing Gujarat to choose their star batsman Shubman Gill as captain.
Given his lack of leadership experience, Gill’s first season as captain was a complete failure. The team from Ahmedabad missed out on the playoffs for the first time in three years after returning to the finals twice in a row. Since the team only won five of the fourteen games in the 2024 edition of the major event, Gill’s weak captaincy was widely criticized.
