Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar lauded Indian opener KL Rahul for his superb attitude to batting on the difficult English pitch. The fourth Test between England and India is presently underway at Old Trafford in Manchester. England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl first, a choice that has historically resulted in defeats for teams at this venue in Test matches.
Manjrekar stated that Rahul has demonstrated excellent shot selection, particularly in England, where drives are not intended for boundaries. He applauded Rahul’s consistency and remarked that young Indian batsmen are now consistently flourishing overseas, thanks to frequent Test tours to SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia).
“KL Rahul takes the appropriate approach to playing shots. When the ball is pitched up, the drive is used to score two runs rather than a boundary, according to English cricketers. That’s exactly what he did with the two cover drives he used. This is a guy who hasn’t made a mistake in the series and continues to deliver.
So India is blessed with KL Rahul, who has finally found consistency in his batting,” Manjrekar remarked on JioHotstar.
“Because the outfield is slow, many of the shots he took resulted in two runs. But this is precisely what we expected from KL Rahul. We’re also seeing a lot of young batters compete with the legends of the past – and do so consistently. One explanation is because they’re doing well. The other is that India now plays a lot of Test matches in countries like England, Australia, and South Africa, virtually every two years,” he said.
Rahul calms the dressing room: Jonathan Trott
Former England batter Jonathan Trott stated the Indian opener has been a steady presence for India, bringing calm to the dressing room. He praised Rahul’s composure, and improved judgment in leaving deliveries. Trott believes Rahul is in fine form and advised against rushing after building solid partnerships.
“I think KL Rahul has been a real bedrock for India, and he certainly calms that dressing room down. The way that he goes about his business, his mannerisms, the way that he scores — the areas that he scores in — is well attuned to being an opening batter. He’s leaving the ball really well, and for me, that’s the number one thing he’s really worked out in his game. I think he’s in great form. If they can continue this partnership — and not go out there trying to cash in too early after doing the hard work — they’ll be in a great position,” said Trott.
