Manoj Tiwary, a former Indian cricketer, blasted Indian skipper Shubman Gill for his aggressiveness in the third Test against England at Lord’s. On the evening of Day 3, Gill got into a heated argument with England opener Zak Crawley, who was attempting to squander time by running down the clock.
Tiwary suggested that Gill was trying to emulate Virat Kohli’s attitude, which had an indirect impact on his batting. He also advised Gill to be aggressive without verbally responding to opposing players, as this would drain his energy.
“I don’t like the way Captain Gill is handling things. I believe he is attempting to replicate what Virat did last time. As a result, it is not improving his batting. Since he became IPL captain, I’ve witnessed him adopting an aggressive demeanour and engaging in animated conversations with umpires. It was unlike Gill.
He doesn’t need to be aggressive or prove anything,” Manoj Tiwary told SportsBoom.
“I realise a captain should lead from the front, but this much aggression is unnecessary. It drains your energies. He is able to maintain his aggressive personality. It does not mean you have to always return it vocally. Aggression can also be demonstrated by winning Test matches. India might have easily won the series 2-1. Such hostility is detrimental to the game, particularly from the captain of the Indian cricket team,” he continued.
Tiwary was also not happy with the kind of words used during the match proceedings at Lord’s. He insisted that this kind of approaching became a trend and need to be in control at times.
“I am not happy with the language and words that are coming in the audio when they are near the stumps. You are representing the Indian cricket team. I think this has become a trend, as previous captains have probably used such words to express their anger, but this needs to be controlled. If you use slang, the next generation will pick it up,” Tiwary said.
