Marcus Trescothick, the former opener for England, said he hasn’t decided if he wants to take on the position full-time. Trescothick will be the Three Lions’ temporary head coach for the white-ball series against Australia at home next month.
The England Test squad is now playing the first game of a three-match series against Sri Lanka at home, with Trescothick serving as their batting coach. During the third Test at Kennington Oval, he would depart early from the Test team to join England’s white-ball setup. From September 11 to September 29, Jos Buttler and company will take on Australia in three Twenty20 Internationals and five One-Day Internationals.
Matthew Mott resigned as England’s head coach for white-ball cricket last month after the team lost both the ODI World Cup (2023) and the T20 World Cup (2024). Numerous former players and seasoned coaches have been connected to the esteemed position since his departure. Trescothick isn’t thinking past the Australia series, so he hasn’t thrown in the towel yet.
“I had never given it any thought until I was presented with this possibility. I’m not really planning ahead past the conclusion of the Australia series. Trescothick was cited as stating, “I have been very much focused on the job we are doing here [with the Test team].”
I am eager to take on the role and am looking forward to the opportunity: Marcus Trescothick
In addition, the 48-year-old was enthusiastic about the possibility of working with the Three Lions as their coach for the next round of away excursions. Interestingly, Marcus Trescothick has been a member of the England coaching staff since the beginning of 2021. Considering his background working with players on the circuit, Trescothick would be a wise pick to be the permanent white-ball coach.

“You make plans for the winter: we’re heading to Pakistan and New Zealand.” I have not really sat down and decided, “Okay, this is where I will try to go, this is what I will try to do,” because I am so steeped in it at the moment. Without a doubt, I am excited about the opportunity. I am quite eager to start the work. From then, we will figure things out a little bit more,” he continued.
