Women’s cricket fans around the world were captivated by the intense Women’s Premier League (WPL 2025) final, which got off to an exciting start. At Mumbai’s famed Brabourne Stadium, the hosts Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W) faced off against the Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) in the summit match. It was an exciting weekend for cricket fans.
Following the toss, Meg Lanning, the captain of DC-W, chose to bowl first. All-rounder Marizanne Kapp provided the ideal backdrop to remove Hayley Matthews, a powerful all-rounder, and therefore justified the selection. With the new ball, Kapp performed nearly flawlessly under the circumstances. The pitch was good enough for hitters to stay on it and get the most out of it, but the South African’s brilliant cricketing set the stage on fire.
The third over of MI-W’s innings was the star of the day. With an early vigil, Matthews, who has been batting brilliantly in the current tournament, got things started. But Kapp managed to get one of her deliveries to swing back late into the hitter from the West Indies, causing play to spread out all over the field. Consequently, Matthews was left surprised as the ball rattled her leg stump, thanks to the ideal line and length combined with a late swing. With the Mumbai camp astonished and silent, the dismissal seemed to be of a rather large size. Only five runs were scored by the squad at that moment.

Harmanpreet performed a knock for a captain.
This kept the hosts in check during the powerplay stages and also helped Delhi take control of the game later on. But MI-W captain Harmanpreet Kaur led her team to a solid 149/7 with a crucial 66-run knock off 44 balls.
