Mark Wood, an England bowler, aims to make his Ashes comeback alongside teammate Jofra Archer, who is also returning from a lengthy injury layoff. While Archer has been picked to England’s team for the second Test against India, Wood is currently rehabilitating from an injury.
Wood suffered a knee injury in the Champions Trophy encounter against Afghanistan. He is confident in his return to Test cricket and looks forward to playing alongside Archer.
“I still have hope. We’re running our own race a little. He (Archer) is ready to go now; I still have a ways to go, and there are plenty of other bowlers around. “So I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s definitely me and him pencilled in,” added Wood.
“We have to be at our peak, 90 mph or higher, and provide something to the captain and the squad. It’s no good just expecting to play when these guys are already on the team and doing well.
You have to earn your spot, and I am confident that both Jofra and I will do so,” Mark Wood said.
The right-arm pacer acknowledged the healthy competition between himself and Archer, arguing that their small race would ultimately decide the spot in the red-ball setup.
“We all need to provide those performances. It would be great to play with him, but we each need to run our own races, come up to speed, and earn that spot,” Wood explained.
Both players appeared together in a Test match against the West Indies. The Ashes series begins on November 21, and if they secure their places, they would return to Test cricket after a five-year absence since 2020.
