The news that speedster Mark Wood will miss the entirety of 2024 due to a bone-stress injury in his right elbow has dealt a serious blow to the England team. Due to this situation, Wood will be unable to participate in the future Test tours to Pakistan and New Zealand.
The 34-year-old pacer’s absence was first explained as a precaution after he suffered a strain to his right thigh in the opening Test of the current series at Old Trafford against Sri Lanka. But what caught Wood off guard was that a routine elbow scan turned up a more serious underlying problem.
“I was astonished to find out I have some bone stress in my right elbow during what I assumed was a normal check-up on a previously problematic elbow. My elbow was a little uncomfortable, so the medical staff and I decided it would be a good idea to have it checked out following the small groin injury at Emirates Old Trafford. Wood posted on Instagram, “I’d put that down to the typical niggles every fast bowler gets and which I was playing through.”
In 2025, see you for some rockets: Mark Wood
During the period when Wood was most successful, he was routinely hitting velocities of over 95 mph. Wood’s impressive previous performances—which included a standout stint at Trent Bridge where he achieved 97.1 mph—even led captain Ben Stokes to predict that Wood would eventually break the 100 mph mark. The Three Lions will definitely feel Wood’s absence, especially in light of his previous performance. It was his first five-wicket haul in a home Test match when he went 5 for 40 at Edgbaston.
“I will be absent for the remainder of the year in order to rest and rehabilitate; I fully anticipate returning to work in early 2025. I’ve been here before, so I’ll put in all the hard work in the background. Nothing makes me feel more pleased to represent my nation than I do. “See you in 2025 for some rockets,” he continued.

Throughout his recuperation, the Northumberland native will have close collaboration with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) medical staff. The intention is to have him fully fit for the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan in early 2025 as well as England’s white-ball trip of India. With Wood out of the picture, England has already started looking at other options, bringing up Olly Stone and giving young left-arm seamer Josh Hull his debut.
