At the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday, February 27, Match 9 of the Champions Trophy 2025 between Bangladesh and Pakistan ended in a washout without a ball being thrown due to rain. The campaigns of both sides came to a conclusion at this point. After losing their opening two tournament games, both teams finished with one point each.
Pakistan, the hosts, had a relatively dismal run, finishing fourth with a net run rate of -1.087. Following a 60-run loss to New Zealand in the tournament’s opening match due to a lackluster batting performance, they were soundly thrashed by arch-rivals India by six wickets, meaning their only chance to advance was in the match between Bangladesh and New Zealand. Even before their match against Bangladesh, Pakistan was eliminated from the tournament due to a New Zealand victory.
Bangladesh also suffered defeats in their matches.
Nonetheless, the team headed by Najmul Hossain Shanto performed comparatively better than Pakistan. In their first game, they lost against India with a fight. Bangladesh participated in some parts of the match, even against the Kiwis. In the end, the Tigers lost both matches by a margin of six and five wickets, respectively.
It’s interesting to note that weather-related spoilsports eliminated this game, making it the second in the tournament. The match between South Africa and Australia on February 25 at the same location also ended similarly. India and New Zealand will advance to the knockout stages based on the standings of the teams in Group A.
The Black Caps’ victory over Bangladesh had already guaranteed the aforementioned teams a spot in the semi-finals. On Sunday, March 2, India and New Zealand will play one other at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
