Prisoner rehabilitation occasionally prompts officials to do unusual actions in an effort to promote the inmates’ positive behaviours. As of right now, Mathura Jail has launched a cricket competition called the “Jail Premier League (JPL).”
One noteworthy project aims to enhance the mental and physical well-being of inmates. Inspired by the Indian Premier League (IPL), the event gave those incarcerated a sense of excitement and independence in their otherwise restricted life.
Participants in the competition, which began in April 2025, included inmates from different barracks. Group A and Group B, each consisting of four teams, were created from the eight teams that were initially assembled. The jail hosted a grand final, two semifinals, and a total of twelve league games.

It is an effort to reaffirm oneself: The superintendent of the jail
The Capitals and Knight Riders faced off in the championship game, and the Knight Riders emerged victorious. Jail Superintendent Anshuman Garg, who stated the event’s goal, was the primary planner of this project.
The idea is to create a sense of freedom in the confined world of today. This is a race of confidence, a victory of optimism, and not merely a final match. According to TOI, the jail superintendent stated that “every run, every catch, every win… is an attempt to prove oneself again.” The pitch remains the same, but the players have changed.
Balloons were added to the correctional compound’s cricket pitch. The audience applauded from the sides as the competition went on, and winners and exceptional performers received prizes. Interestingly, Kaushal, a prisoner, won Player of the Series and Player of the Match awards. While Bhura was awarded the Orange Cap for hitting the most runs, another player, Pankaj, was awarded the Purple Cap for his bowling efforts. In addition, a dance performance was held to commemorate the conclusion of the Jail Premier League.
