On Friday, March 28, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered their first defeat at Chepauk since the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) debut season against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Phil Salt gave RCB a spectacular start inside the powerplay by hitting some bold strokes after being called to bat first. However, MS Dhoni superbly stumped him, ending his innings of 32 from 16 balls. At No. 3, Devdutt Padikkal had a quick but significant innings, scoring 27 runs off of 14 deliveries.
Following an over from Matheesha Pathirana, in which he struck the Sri Lankan seamer for a six and a four off consecutive deliveries, Virat Kohli found it difficult to find his timing. After a 30-ball 31, Kohli was eventually out. Rajat Patidar, the captain of the RCB, made superb use of the lifelines after being dropped three times in two overs.
With four fours and three sixes, the right-handed batsman blasted a vital 51 off 32 balls. Tim David helped RCB reach a respectable total of 196/7 with three sixes off Sam Curran in the final over. Noor Ahmad, who hit a three-for, was the best bowler for CSK.
In response, CSK had a terrible start after losing skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahul Tripathi to Josh Hazlewood’s second over. As CSK fell to 26/3, Deepak Hooda was also removed cheaply in the fifth over.
Sam Curran was ejected while attempting to hit a big shot of fellow countryman Liam Livingstone, despite Rachin Ravindra and Curran’s attempts to build a partnership. With 28 balls remaining, CSK was seven down for 99 as wickets continued to tumble through the middle overs.
To postpone the inevitable, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja contributed 31 runs off 20 deliveries. Dhoni reduced the margin of defeat by hitting two sixes and a four off the final over delivered by Krunal Pandya after Jadeja was removed in the penultimate over. The home team managed 146/8 in their 20 overs, while the former captain of CSK finished undefeated at 30 off 16 balls. Hazlewood concluded his four overs with outstanding figures of 3/21. Livingstone and Yash Dayal, meanwhile, both took two wickets. In his RCB debut, Bhuvneshwar Kumar also claimed a wicket.
