The Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated the Delhi Capitals (DC) by a thrilling 12-run margin on Sunday night at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, handing the DC their first IPL 2025 loss. A clinical MI effort ultimately defeated Delhi, who had won four straight games and were undefeated.
After DC captain Axar Patel won the toss, MI was asked to bat first and amassed 205/5, helped by a 59 off 33 balls from Tilak Varma. With three sixes and six boundaries, the southpaw made it look easy. Ryan Rickelton (41 off 25), Suryakumar Yadav (40 off 28), and Naman Dhir (unbeaten 38 off 17) provided him with the last boost.
There were some memorable moments for the DC bowlers with the ball. With stats of 2/23, Kuldeep Yadav was outstanding, and Vipraj Nigam took 2/41, which included the valuable wickets of Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma, respectively.
The home team, chasing 206, lost Jake Fraser-McGurk early on when Deepak Chahar got rid of him for a golden duck. Abishek Porel and Karun Nair, however, launched a counterattack and put together a 119-run partnership. After racing to a fifty off twenty-two balls, Nair scored 89 off forty balls, which featured five sixes and twelve fours. After contributing a 33, Porel lost against Karn Sharma.
MI’s wickets in the middle overs changed the course of the match. Karn struck repeatedly, dismissing KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs, and Jasprit Bumrah took out Axar Patel. With Nair out and wickets falling, DC needed 14 from 8 balls to reach their final pair. A run-out during Ashutosh Sharma’s attempt at a second run ended his effort. DC was ultimately knocked out for 193 in 19 overs.
