At their home field, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated the Mumbai Indians (MI) by a commanding 36 runs to start the 2025 Indian Premier League.
The Titans capitalised on the powerplay after being put in to bat first thanks to a strong start from captain Shubman Gill (38 off 27) and Sai Sudharsan (63 off 41). In six overs, the pair led the team to 66/0. But as the fielding limits were removed, MI’s bowlers retaliated. Hardik Pandya dismissed Gill for the fourth time in T20 cricket, continuing his record against him.
Although Jos Buttler (39 off 24) was instrumental in the middle overs, GT was unable to reach 200 because the visitors continued to take wickets at regular intervals. The team reached 196/8 in 20 overs despite a late collapse in which they lost five wickets in rapid succession. The best bowler for Mumbai was Pandya (2/29), while Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman also contributed with one wicket apiece.
The five-time champions’ chase got off to a terrible start as Mohammed Siraj got rid of former captain Rohit Sharma for just eight runs in the opening over. MI scored 48 runs in the powerplay after Siraj struck once more in the fifth over to dismiss Ryan Rickelton (6). Tilak Varma (39 off 36) and Suryakumar Yadav (48 off 28) attempted to steady the innings, but the needed run rate continued to rise.
After being brought in after the eleventh over, Prasidh Krishna (2/18) produced an outstanding spell. Tilak was about to take aim at the big shots when he was first fired. Soon after, Suryakumar came forward and gave Gill a catch. MI had to settle for 160/6 in 20 overs after the bottom order failed to deliver the much-needed acceleration. GT’s bowlers did a fantastic job carrying out their strategies; Prasidh and Mohammed Siraj each took two wickets. Sai Kishore and Rashid Khan both took one wicket, demonstrating their economy.
With this setback, MI has now lost two straight games this season. The five-time winners must rapidly reassemble in order to secure their first victory of the season, since Pandya’s return as captain has not produced encouraging results. Gujarat, on the other hand, will feel relieved to score their first goal and maintain the pace.
