In a rare high-scoring thriller, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 12 runs on Friday, April 4, in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match No. 16 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.
After winning the toss, Hardik Pandya chose to field first on a surface that appeared to be considerably better for batting than the ones that supporters are accustomed to seeing at the Ekana. Mitchell Marsh played a brilliant knock of 60 from 31 balls to confirm this. Mumbai, however, recovered well from the powerplay, taking three wickets in five overs.
By dropping the anchor, Aiden Markram gave Lucknow a boost. As the pair added a vital 51-run partnership off 31 deliveries, Ayush Badoni provided his resolute backing. Before being removed in the 18th over, Markram reached his first half-century of the season off just 34 balls.
David Miller scored 27 off 14 balls in a spectacular cameo at the end. In their 20 overs, Lucknow reached 203/8 thanks to his barrage of boundaries in the latter part of the innings. With stats of 5/36 in his four overs, Hardik Pandya was the best bowler for MI.
In response, Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks were removed by LSG’s new-ball bowlers Shardul Thakur and Akash Deep, respectively. With 31 runs off his first 10 balls, Naman Dhir had a great start. After this, though, he significantly slowed down and took 15 off the following 14 deliveries. However, the Punjab batsman and Suryakumar Yadav compiled a partnership of 69 runs.
Tilak Varma joined Suryakumar after Dhir was fired by the highly effective Digvesh Rathi. Although Tilak had trouble finding his timing, the MI vice-captain played several entertaining shots. In the 17th over, Suryakumar was finally out for 67 off 43 balls.
With six wickets remaining, MI needed 48 runs off the final 22 balls, and Hardik smashed a boundary off his first delivery. In the penultimate over, which gave MI just seven runs, Tilak made the decision to quit. Using all of his experience, Shardul bowled to his field, allowing MI to score 22 runs off the last over.
Hardik hit a six to start the over. Avesh Khan, on the other hand, recovered admirably, scoring just three runs off his final five deliveries. The tourists suffered their third loss of the season with a final score of 191/5. Every bowler for LSG gave up runs at an economy rate of ten or more. But Rathi bowled brilliantly in the middle overs, assisting LSG in a good comeback. In addition to getting rid of the dangerous Dhir, his four-over spell only produced 21 runs.
