Rohit Sharma’s 70 off just 46 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday gave the entire Hyderabad team a taste of his brilliance as the Mumbai Indians easily chased down the 144-run total. After properly calling it at the toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya chose to field first in the opening match of the current IPL 2025. His choice immediately paid off, as his bowlers sent half of the SRH side back after only 35 runs were scored.
In the powerplay, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar were outstanding, easily destroying the dangerous southpaw trio of Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, and Abhishek Sharma. Hardik Pandya also took a wicket in the form of Aniket Verma. The Kiwi pacer dismissed both openers, and Kishan was dismissed in a contentious judgement against Chahar.
Heinrich Klaasen and Impact Sub Abhinav Manohar then played a supportive role, stitching a crucial 99-run partnership for the sixth wicket. However, the team’s final score of 143 for the loss of eight wickets showed that the two players’ efforts were insufficient.
Boult was the best bowler for the visitors because, in addition to having a strong start, he bowled incredibly well in the closing stages of his period at Uppal, finishing with 4 for 26. Jasprit Bumrah and Pandya each took a wicket, while Deepak Chahar claimed a few. The Mumbai-based team didn’t seem to have any trouble chasing the target, and they needed to be determined from the beginning to undermine the hosts’ confidence.
The goals were very obvious after Rohit’s incredible innings-opening performance. The ace batsman only needed some assistance from the other end, which he duly received. Will Jacks and Rohit shared 64 runs together, and then Suryakumar Yadav and his senior teammate added another 53 runs.
Rohit departed for 70, but by the time he got out, the win had almost become a formality for the five-time champions. Yadav hit the winning runs, as MI chased down the target within just 15.4 overs and seven wickets to spare.
