At the Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Indians defeated the Chennai Super Kings by nine wickets, chasing down 177 with 26 balls remaining, to claim their fourth IPL 2025 victory.
On a Wankhede pitch that scored a lot of runs, CSK was put into bat and limited to 176/5 in 20 overs, which appeared to be below average. The 17-year-old rookie, Ayush Mhatre, gave CSK a strong push in the powerplay with a scorching 32 off 15 balls to start. However, a deft slower ball from Deepak Chahar knocked him down.
After leading Mumbai’s bowling assault with Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner, CSK was unable to score any runs for 27 balls. A stand of 79 runs from Shivam Dube (50 off 32) and Ravindra Jadeja (53* off 35) attempted to turn the innings around, but it was too late. Jadeja reached his fifty with two late boundaries as Boult returned for the penultimate over after MS Dhoni was softly dismissed to Bumrah in the 19th over.
In response. After struggling for a while, Rohit Sharma reached his first fifty of the season off of 33 balls. He was accompanied by the finest Suryakumar Yadav, who smashed spinners all over the park. In a mere 26 deliveries, he reached his fifty, smashing 68* off 30 balls. The team went overboard thanks to the pair’s unbroken 114-run stand. Ryan Rickelton was dismissed for 24 by Ravindra Jadeja, the sole breakthrough, but MI had already gained the upper hand. MI climbs to sixth place in the points table with this victory, while CSK is stuck at the bottom.
Key Moments from MI vs CSK, Match 38 of IPL 2025
1. Rohit Sharma roars back to form
Mumbai Indians star opener Rohit Sharma returned to form, with a scintillating 45-ball 76. Chasing 177, Rohit got MI off to a flyer, taking on the CSK pacers single-handedly. Coming into the match with a string of low scores, Rohit looked a class apart as he hammered two fours and four sixes to reach his half-century. More than just a return to form, he created history with his first six to surpass Chris Gayle’s record for most T20 sixes in a single country. Rohit now has 360 sixes in India, overtaking Gayle’s 357.

2. Ayush Mhatre’s dream debut
Young Ayush Mhatre grabbed the attention against MI, making a dream debut for CSK. The 17-year-old became the youngest-ever player to represent CSK, surpassing Abhinav Mukund’s record. With the visiting team under pressure after losing Rachin Ravindra early, Mhatre took the onus on himself. On only his second delivery, he smashed a boundary on the off-side and followed it up with a flick over long-on for six. His cameo of 32 off 15 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes, helped CSK get back on track and race to 48/1 in the powerplay. MS Dhoni was seen smiling from the dressing room, seeing the youngster contribute. He was eventually dismissed by Deepak Chahar.

3. CSK’s poor run in IPL 2025 continues
The MS Dhoni-led side has been having a forgettable season, with six losses in eight games. The MI defeat has dented their hopes for qualification as they languish at the bottom of the table with just six league games for them. The side will require a miracle to take them out of this situation.
