The hosts Mumbai Indians (MI) made a strong statement in the 38th game of the current Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) at the legendary Wankhede Stadium by defeating the fiercest rivals, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), by a commanding nine wickets. MI successfully carried out their plan by choosing to bowl first after winning the toss, limiting CSK to 176/5 before chasing down the mark in just 15.4 overs.
CSK, who batted first, had a rough start. Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre fell quickly after Rachin Ravindra, who fell first. Despite failing to capitalise, debutant Mhatre showed potential with a rapid 32 runs off 15 balls. With an undefeated 53* from 35 balls, Ravindra Jadeja led the innings and provided some steadiness in the middle order. Shivam Dube demonstrated his strength once more by smashing 50 off just 32 balls. Nevertheless, MI’s bowlers held CSK in check.
At pivotal moments, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Dube and MS Dhoni due to his clinical figures of 2/25. Deepak Chahar (1/32) and Mitchell Santner (1/14) also contributed with strong spells.
In retaliation, MI’s pursuit was extremely harsh. With 24 off 19, Ryan Rickelton gave the squad a solid start before losing to Jadeja. After that, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav gave a batting masterclass. Rohit scored a brilliant 76* off 45 balls, which included six sixes and four fours. Even more devastating was Suryakumar, who sped to 68* off just 30 balls, including five sixes of his own.
With an undefeated 114-run partnership, the pair destroyed CSK’s bowling attack. The Chennai bowlers were unable to stop the run flow, with Pathirana being the most costly as he conceded 34 runs in 1.4 overs. With 26 balls remaining, Mumbai chased down the target to secure a crushing victory and significantly increase their chances of making the playoffs.
