The Mumbai Indians’ 59-run win over the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 21 guaranteed the fourth and final IPL 2025 playoff berth.
MI, who were selected to bat first, had some early difficulties as Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton were unable to convert their starts and Rohit Sharma was unable to get going. The highlight of the show was Suryakumar Yadav (73* off 43), who established a crucial combination with Tilak Varma despite having a sluggish start. He eventually teed off alongside Naman Dhir as the Mumbai Indians reached a challenging 180 after adding 48 runs in the final two overs.
Then, early on the powerplay, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar struck, putting DC behind.
Even before the 10-over mark, half of the DC team was back in the hut despite some resistance from Vipraj Nigam. MI triumphed by a huge margin when Mitchell Santner (3 for 11) and Jasprit Bumrah (3 for 12) suppressed the middle order.
As a result, the Delhi Capitals are now the sixth and final club to be ousted from the league, while MI will join the Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings in the playoffs.
Here are the most important numbers from the game:
1 – Suryakumar Yadav registered his 13th consecutive score of 25 or more in all T20s. This is a joint-world record he shares with Temba Bavuma who achieved the feat between 2019 and 2020.
1 – This match marked the fourth time in IPL 2025 that Tilak Varma played 25 or more balls in an innings while striking that less than 130. No other player has more such innings this season.

5 – The 48 runs scored by MI in the last two overs of their innings is the fifth-highest in a single innings in IPL history. The record (54) was set by RCB this year against CSK in Bengaluru. Delhi Capitals made 53 from the last two overs against GT in Delhi in 2024. In third place are MI, who added 51 off the last two overs incidentally against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium. Punjab Kings made 49 against RCB at Dubai in 2020 in the final two overs.
1 – Jasprit Bumrah’s three-wicket burst made him the highest wicket-taker of all time against Delhii Capitals in the IPL with 30 wickets. The second spot is shared by Sunil Narine, R Ashwin and Piyush Chawla with 27 wickets each.
2 – With their qualification this year set in stone, Mumbai Indians have made it into the playoffs of an IPL season 11 times. Only CSK with 12 such seasons have finished in the top four more often.
