Mumbai Indians vs. Delhi Capitals, Match No. 63, is the most important of the remaining nine IPL 2025 games. The only teams still vying for the fourth position are MI and DC, while three clubs have already secured their playoff spots in the competition.
Both teams lost to the Gujarat Titans, and it’s significant to note that they also lost at home. It was a thrilling, see-saw match when MI lost to GT in Mumbai. GT removed both openers early, giving them a strong start with the ball. On a challenging surface, GT’s bowlers responded late in the innings after Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav had restored it.
In its signature fashion, GT’s top order set out to chase the DLS target instead of the real one. Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill kept the scorecard moving until Sherfane Rutherford hammered GT back into the game. The rain hit GT before the game began at the 15-over mark. Important wickets were taken by Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah after the restart to help GT’s batting recover. When the game started up again, GT needed to score 15 runs off the final over due to the rain. GT came home in a humdinger after Deepak Chahar shaped up to bowl the final over, which went 4, 1, 6, 2nb, 1, W, 1.
In Delhi, however, the Titans’ victory over DC was much more methodical. In the powerplay, KL Rahul overcame a sluggish start to score a crucial century that included cameos from the other batters. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, GT’s openers, took no chances and went after the 200-run objective alone. Gill provided support with an undefeated 93, while Sai Sudharsan scored a century.
In Delhi, MI and DC had already fought one another in the tournament. MI had a solid total thanks to Tilak Varma’s fifty and Naman Dhir’s cameo, while Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav received starts. While Karun Nair emerged as a revelation, DC lost Jake Fraser-McGurk on the opening ball of the chase. DC’s pursuit was carried by Nair alone until he was fired, at which time it fell apart. Karn Sharma caused DC’s middle order to crumble, ultimately falling 12 runs short of their goal. In a bizarre sequence at the close of their innings, DC lost three wickets off the final three balls.
