After the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were eliminated on Monday night due to their defeat by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoff race is now down to just two clubs.
Following the completion of three of the four playoff slots by Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS), the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) will compete for the remaining berth. On May 21, both are scheduled to face off at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
LSG was officially eliminated from the playoff race on Monday, joining the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and SRH as the fifth club to be eliminated. Now that MI and DC are fighting for the last slot, their match on Wednesday might determine who advances.
MI has 14 points from 12 games and a positive net run rate (NRR) of 1.156, which puts them in fourth position right now. With 13 points and an NRR of 0.260, DC, on the other hand, is in fifth place. Because of this, the five-time champions have a small edge in qualifying. With a victory over Delhi, Mumbai will reach 16 points and guarantee their postseason berth with one game remaining. Since the best they could score at that time would be 15 points, the team captained by Axar Patel will lose.
If the DC win, though, they will go up to 15 points, while MI will stay at 14.
After that, the battle reaches their individual final matches versus PBKS. In order to qualify, DC needs to defeat MI and then defeat the team led by Shreyas Iyer once more. Regardless of how they lose against Punjab, that would put them at 17 points and eliminate MI. If MI defeats DC and then loses to PBKS, however, MI can still go to the playoffs by defeating PBKS and scoring 16 points. MI’s campaign is terminated if they lose both of their remaining games.
