In Match 33 of the 2025 Indian Premier League, the Mumbai Indians defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by a commanding four wickets at the Wankhede Stadium. With six points, MI now occupies seventh place after their clinical performance with the bat and the ball guaranteed them two vital points.
When MI’s bowlers decided to bowl first on a slow surface, they carried out their strategies flawlessly. The English all-rounder Jasprit Bumrah (1/21) and Will Jacks (2/14) kept the SRH batsmen on the defensive, removing Travis Head and Ishan Kishan. Despite SRH’s strong start thanks to Abhishek Sharma (40 off 28), the visiting squad did not have the best middle overs. The total always seemed below par, but Heinrich Klaasen (37 off 28) and Aniket Verma’s late cameos helped SRH end on 162/5.
In response, Rohit Sharma (26 off 16) and Ryan Rickelton (31 off 23) gave MI a great start. The pursuit remained on course even though Pat Cummins’ double took out Jacks (36 off 26) and Suryakumar Yadav (26 off 15) in quick succession. With his 21 off 9, Hardik Pandya appeared to end the match quietly, but two wickets fell in late drama when the scores were tied.
Finally, to complete the victory and go undefeated at 21, Tilak Varma played a reverse-sweep off the first ball of the 19th over. SRH has lost three consecutive away games and five of their last seven games.

3. SRH’s underwhelming powerplay batting
SRH’s trusted opening pair, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, had an underwhelming day with the bat, especially in their powerplay. Going at under eight during the first six kept putting pressure on the Hyderabad openers. Wankhede is often known to be batting-friendly, looked a bit sluggish, giving the spinners considerable help. The left-handed duo managed to get just 46 runs without losing their wickets.
