A light-hearted suggestion was made by former England captain Michael Vaughan to help Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Rohit Sharma get back to his best in the current Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL). MI’s first two games against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) have seen the veteran batsman struggle to register many runs.
Imagining oneself in the Indian jersey rather than MI’s team uniform could help the veteran rediscover his touch, the right-handed batter joked. Sharma’s return to form will be crucial to MI’s prospects of qualifying for the playoffs this season, the 50-year-old also stressed.
“He should just act as though he is playing Indian blues instead of Mumbai blues. What a fantastic player he is. If Mumbai is to win this year, he needs to score runs. He needs to start his squad off well and regain his confidence and magic. If Rohit Sharma doesn’t get fired, I don’t think Mumbai will qualify for the playoffs. According to Vaughan, “He is one of those few players who can win a game on his own.”
Vaughan emphasises Rohit Sharma necessity for internal inspiration.
Vaughan also used Rohit Sharma’s efforts during India’s tour of Australia in the whites to underscore the fact that he occasionally appears unconcerned when playing. He also mentioned that the ‘hitman’ will need to channel his inner motivation in order to return MI back to winning ways. This will cause Sharma to revert to his deadly batting style, which on his best day can destroy any opponent.
When I watch Rohit, for example, during the Australia Test series, he occasionally presents the impression that he is unconcerned. He’s not like that, I’m positive. His inspiration must come from within. “He can be very dangerous if he can find that,” he continued.
Following a four-ball duck against CSK, a mere eight-run total against GT, and a collapse to a Mohammed Siraj delivery, the five-time IPL champion captain is under pressure to recover. MI will play their first home game of the season on March 31 at Wankhede Stadium against the reigning champion Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
