On Sunday, October 8, India and Australia faced off in Chennai’s fifth match of the 2017 ODI World Cup on a pitch that was difficult to bat on. India lost their first three wickets with only two runs on the board while attempting to chase a difficult 200-run target. In the eighth over, off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul attempted to calm the ship, but the former gave Mitchell Marsh a straightforward opportunity. But the all-rounder lost control of the catch, giving Kohli a chance to save himself.
When given the chance to bat, Kohli made the most of it by putting up a brilliant 165-run combination with KL Rahul (97* off 115 balls) that helped India get close to an important victory. After making an impressive 85 runs off 116 balls, the Delhi batsman was eventually bowled out. Australia was still in control of the game, but it was already lost. With six wickets in hand and 52 deliveries remaining, Hardik Pandya and Rahul guided the “Men in Blue” home.
The outcome would have been different if Mitchell Marsh had collected Kohli’s catch early in the innings when he was still getting his bearings.
Indian fans recognized the significance of the drop, and while some celebrated it in person, others posted about their joy on social media. It’s not ideal to give someone of Kohli’s caliber a second chance in a run-chase, and Australia continued to regret the error.
Team India crushed Australia thanks to the courageous batting of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul after a dominant bowling performance.
The Australian hitters had a difficult day earlier in the day’s ODI World Cup 2023 match, as they were bowled out for 199 on a slightly dry pitch that favored the spinners. Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Starc were bowled in their 20s, while David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) put together a 69-run combination. The other Australian hitters struggled to adapt to the slow pitch, and in the 50th over, the five-time champions were bowled out for 199.
With the ball, Ravindra Jadeja shone and scored three runs. At least one wicket was taken in the match by each of the six Indian bowlers who bowled. India will have a lot of momentum after this victory as they play Afghanistan on Wednesday before their massive match against Pakistan on October 14.
