By being the fastest Indian bowler to collect 200 wickets in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), Mohammed Shami, India’s star pacer, made history. During India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 encounter against Bangladesh in Dubai on Thursday, the accomplishment was accomplished.
Mohammed Shami broke the long-standing record set by Ajit Agarkar with this accomplishment.
Agarkar had taken 133 innings to reach the milestone, while Shami did so in just his 103rd ODI innings. With this achievement, Mohammed Shami also becomes the second-fastest bowler in the world to reach the 200-wicket mark in ODIs, after Mitchell Starc of Australia, who did so in 102 innings. In addition, the pacer beat Starc in the global record for the fewest balls needed to take 200 wickets, breaking a major record.
In just 5126 deliveries, the Uttar Pradesh native surpassed Starc (5240 balls) to attain the milestone. Shami joined a select group of Indian bowling greats with this accomplishment, becoming just the seventh Indian to reach 200 ODI wickets.

Shami, who needed three wickets to reach the milestone, reached the milestone in style by dismissing Soumya Sarkar and Mehidy Hasan Miraz early in his stint before coming back to send Jaker Ali back to the pavilion. After trying to clear the infield with a well-executed off-cutter off Shami, Jaker, who had been playing a nice knock, was caught at long-on by Virat Kohli.
As India limited Bangladesh to 228 runs, he secured a fifer (5/53) by taking the wickets of Tanzim Hasan and Taskin Ahmed near the close of the innings.
