MS Dhoni, a former Indian captain, has spoken out about his future with Chennai Super Kings, an Indian Premier League (IPL) side. He confirmed his long-term commitment to the franchise, describing his relationship with CSK as lasting and meaningful.
MS Dhoni has been a key member of the five-time champions from the IPL’s first season in 2008, helping them to multiple victories.
Following Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s resignation due to an elbow injury, he took over as captain again in the 2025 season. The season, however, proved to be a difficult one for the franchise, as CSK finished last in the points table for the first time in their existence, with only four wins from 14 matches.
Despite his unsatisfactory performance, Dhoni’s recent comments are interpreted as a sign of his continued connection with the franchise after his playing days.
“Me and CSK, we are together. You know even for the next 15-20 years (crowd cheers). I hope they don’t think I’ll be playing for another 15-20 years! But yeah,” Dhoni said in a private event in Chennai as quoted by Hindustan Times.
There had been speculation that the 44-year-old might step away from the game following the IPL 2024 season. However, Dhoni made a strong recovery from his knee issue and continued playing. He has also indicated that Gaikwad will return and resume his role as captain for the franchise.
“It’s not about one year or two years. I will always be sitting in a yellow jersey. You know whether I’ll be playing or not in a while, but yeah, you know yourself,” Dhoni added.
At a separate event, Dhoni had previously avoided giving a direct response when asked about his playing future. During that event, he was more forthcoming while reflecting on CSK’s disappointing season and discussing the road ahead for the franchise.
“Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also,” Dhoni said.
