The legendary Indian batsman-wicketkeeper MS Dhoni, who is renowned for remaining poised under duress, has had times when his emotions overcame him. One such uncommon instance occurred during the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL), when Dhoni stormed onto the field to argue with the umpires over a contentious no-ball call. In retrospect, the former captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) acknowledged that it was an error, but that mistakes do happen occasionally.
The incident took place at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on April 11, 2019, during an IPL game between CSK and Rajasthan Royals. When Ben Stokes of the Royals bowled a waist-high full toss in the last over of the game, the Chennai squad needed eight runs off the final three balls. The CSK camp was confused and incensed when the on-field umpire called it a no-ball at first but then changed his mind.
MS Dhoni had an unusual reaction to this, walking out of the dugout onto the field and addressing the umpires.
Because of his actions, Dhoni violated the IPL’s code of conduct and was fined 50% of his match fees. When host Mandira Bedi questioned Dhoni about the incident during a recent event, he revealed that he had ever lost his temper on the field.
Lots of time. It has occurred during one of the IPL games. I simply walked across the field. Therefore, that was a grave error. But aside from that, there have also been times when something is set off because we play a sport with extremely high stakes—you’re expected to win every game,” he stated, as cited by TOI.
“Please don’t go,” we said as we were in the dugout: Mohit Sharma.
Mohit Sharma, an Indian bowler, previously discussed the incident and disclosed the cause of Dhoni’s rage. During the over, he exposed the atmosphere of the dressing room.
‘Please don’t go, don’t go,’ we pleaded in the dugout. However, he didn’t even glance over his shoulder. Everyone thought that the lion had penetrated the ground after the way he exited the field. Having left at the wrong moment, he was already enraged. Because he usually doesn’t leave things to others, he couldn’t afford to abandon the game during a somewhat challenging period.
He arrived, sat down, and then the thing occurred. So ‘he gave it a no-ball no?’ he added. “Yes, he did signal,” we said. Then he continued without stopping. He requested me to bring the laptop back when he got back. When the video analyst gave him the footage, he exclaimed, “It was a no-ball,” Mohit Sharma stated on the 2 Sloggers Podcast.
Prior to the IPL 2025 mega auction, the veteran was kept for INR 4 crore even though he had resigned as captain before the 2024 tournament. The wicketkeeper-batsman will have the chance to make CSK history because he is only 18 runs away from breaking Suresh Raina’s record of 4687 runs, which would make him the team’s best run scorer in IPL history. On March 23 at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, the five-time champions will play their first IPL 2025 match against bitter rivals the Mumbai Indians.
