In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT) will face off in their opening match. For the first time ever, Shreyas Iyer will be leading PBKS. He has served as captain before, though. In the previous league season, he guided the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to victory. Additionally, he has received great praise for his captaincy in domestic competitions.
This is among the primary factors that led PBKS to purchase the player in the mega auction for INR 26.75 crores. The player has been handed the captaincy by the team, demonstrating their faith and trust in him. Seeing how Iyer manages his new staff will be interesting.
In the meantime, the entire staff and players were present at a get-together organized by the PBKS team. Musheer Khan, the young batter, was seen mimicking Iyer’s gait and social interactions during the event.
Coach Ricky Ponting was shown to be impressed by Musheer’s performance in a video that went popular on social media. He clapped for the player and gave a subtle smile and nod. Iyer, meantime, was standing there giggling at Musheer’s imitation of him.

Is Shreyas Iyer capable of leading PBKS to their first IPL 2025 title?
Shreyas Iyer is without a doubt one of the league’s top captains. He began leading the Delhi Capitals (previously known as the Daredevils) in 2018 and has a wealth of experience in this field. But he didn’t end there. In addition to helping DC reach the playoffs in 2019–21, he also helped them reach the 2020 finals. After that, in 2022, Iyer was named captain of KKR, and in 2024, he guided the club to victory.
There may be a shortage of strikers for PBKS in the middle and top overs. For their part, the bowling appears to be set up. However, Iyer and Ricky Ponting, the head coach of PBKS, get along well and could lead the team to their first championship together.
