For Sri Lanka, the just-ended ODI World Cup 2023 was rather forgettable. Not being able to advance to the tournament’s knockout stages, Sri Lanka participated in nine group stage games, winning just two and losing seven. With four points from nine games, Sri Lanka only managed to finish one spot ahead of the tenth-place Netherlands in the rankings. Former cricketer Muttiah Muralidaran of Sri Lanka spoke out about their performance in the major competition, pointing out the subpar effort.
It is important to remember that Sri Lanka entered the match with a strong record; in spite of injuries, they were able to advance to the Asia Cup 2023 final. But in the 2023 ODI World Cup, the form collapsed.
Muttiah Muralidaran even declared that this was Sri Lanka’s lowest-ever World Cup performance. He attributed the terrible performance to the players’ lack of dedication.
“I would say that this is the poorest performance we have ever had since we qualified for the World Cup in 1975. I believe the lack of dedication is the problem. They simply weren’t good enough, regardless of what transpired in the midst, Muralidaran said News18.
It is imperative that we comprehend that personal objectives should not be pursued. Muttiah Muralidaran
Muttiah Muralidaran also shared his thoughts on the off-field disputes pertaining to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The International Cricket Council, or ICC, temporarily barred SLC from participating in any ICC events, and Muralitharan turned to President Ranil Wickremesinghe for assistance in settling the dispute.
It is imperative that we recognize the absence of any personal ambitions in this matter. It concerns the future of those youthful aspirants who aspire to represent their nation in cricket and lead professional lives. Muralitharan stated, “Both sides need to consider these cricket players, resolve this issue peacefully, and restore the glory we once enjoyed.
