Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni spoke fondly of the strong affinity he has formed with the city of Chennai over time. The seasoned cricketer has been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team since the Indian Premier League (IPL) began in 2008.
Reflecting on his career, the Ranchi native recalled his Test debut against Sri Lanka at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai. He explained that his special connection with the city began at that moment and has only gotten stronger since.
“It’s a very long relationship that we have had and it started much before the start of the IPL… 2005 was the time when I made my Test debut which happened to be in Chennai (versus Sri Lanka at the MA Chidambaram Stadium). So, it started from that point of time. And yes, CSK helped in a big way because all of a sudden I’m spending 45-50 days here,” Dhoni said in a private event in Chennai.

The 44-year-old also reflected on his long-standing relationship with the CSK franchise, stating that it has played a significant role in shaping him both as a cricketer and as a person. The star cricketer highlighted how CSK has grown into a global brand, with a passionate fan base that extends beyond borders to cricket-playing nations around the world. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter has led the Chennai-based side to five IPL titles, and stands as one of the most successful captains in the history of the tournament.
“So, I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. So, CSK just happened. I think it’s good for Chennai. So, today it’s good for me also. Nowadays when we go and say CSK, it’s not a brand only in India, but when we go to Australia, South Africa, or any of the cricket playing nations,” he concluded.
However, CSK finished at the bottom of the table in IPL 2025 and will be determined to make a strong comeback in the 2026 season. With a renewed focus, the franchise will aim to showcase their full strength and push for a record-extending sixth IPL title.
