Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s star all-rounder, will miss the first Test against South Africa in Dhaka. He may return for the second and final Test in Chattogram, but nothing is confirmed given Bangladesh’s current political scenario.
Nonetheless, the 37-year-old had earlier stated that the home Test series against South Africa would be his final in the longer format. Since then, the team’s administration has been searching for a suitable replacement in red-ball cricket. Captain Najmul Shanto named Mehidy Hasan Miraz as one of the prospective possibilities.
The 26-year-old has already played 47 Tests for Bangladesh, scoring 1,689 runs and taking 183 wickets. Miraz had a great time in Pakistan during the two-match Test series, but he struggled against India. However, captain Shanto has maintained his faith in the all-rounder, believing he can fill Shakib’s shoes.
It is difficult to match Shakib Al Hasan; we are attempting to find the proper combination: Najmul Shanto
Nonetheless, the captain stated that it would be difficult for the team management to replace Shakib quickly. He anticipated that it would take some time to acclimate to the current circumstances. However, he encouraged his players to fill their roles and perform to their full potential.
“It is difficult to compete with him (Shakib). We’re having trouble figuring out the proper combo. It’ll take some time. It’s beyond our control. I believe the players are capable of playing their own parts. It is difficult to match him (Shakib), particularly for the captain. I do not think wickets will change. We have to consider the extra batter or bowler. The No. 7 position becomes critical. We don’t have somebody quite like Shakib bhai, but Miraz could be an excellent substitute,” Shanto was quoted as adding.

“He (Mehidy) bowls and bats magnificently. Miraz is prepared to take on additional tasks. He has improved his batting skills. He is putting the club in fantastic positions. Consider the most recent tests. “I hope Miraz can take Shakib’s place in the next few years,” he continued.
