Australian spinner Nathan Lyon is eager to continue playing and help his country win a second ICC World Test Championship (WTC). The off-spinner was instrumental in Australia’s maiden WTC Final victory over India in 2023, as well as the team’s loss to South Africa at Lord’s in June.
Nathan Lyon has no plans to retire anytime soon, despite recently handing over duty for leading Australia’s victory song to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
The 37-year-old has a lot on his plate, including away series victories in India and England, as well as another World Tour crown.
“I have always stated that I want to win away in India. I hope to win away in England. We’ll have that opportunity in a couple of years, but we have to take it one test at a time and make sure we’re doing everything well here in the West Indies,” Lyon told the ICC.
“Then we have a big summer at home with the Ashes. But another World Test Championship Final is definitely on the cards for me,” he added.
Lyon has 556 Test wickets in his career, ranking third among Australian bowlers. Shane Warne, the renowned leggie, leads the lists with 708 wickets, while Glenn McGrath, a former right-arm seamer, has 563.
The New South Wales-born cricketer isn’t looking to become Australia’s most wicket-taker; instead, he wants to win games in the longest format for his team.
“Warney is a long way away. And, in my opinion, he is the greatest player in the game’s history. I’m just fortunate to be a member of a very special cricket team at the moment. We’re on our way to being a great cricket side, but we’re not there yet, as I’ve always said. But to be a part of this bowling attack and play a role is unique. That’s why I keep playing,” Lyon explained.
