Nepal upset Scotland with a stunning one-wicket win in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match on Monday in Dundee. However, the drama did not finish with the winning run, as enthusiastic Nepal fans in the grandstand came onto the pitch to celebrate their team’s highest-ever successful ODI run chase.
The game started with Nepal correctly calling it and choosing to field first.
Scotland made 296/7 in their allotted 50 overs, with to Charlie Tear’s 80 and Finlay McCreath’s 55. Furthermore, skipper Richie Berrington (40) and wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Cross (39) contributed key runs to push the total past 290 runs. Meanwhile, for Nepal, Karan KC was the standout bowler, taking 2 for 43 in ten overs. Sompal Kami and Rijan Dhakal each claimed two wickets, while Sandeep Lamichhane took one.
Nepal responded quickly and effectively. Kushal Bhurtel, the opener, scored 53 off 44 balls, with Bhim Sharki (40) and skipper Rohit Paudel (37) supporting. However, a middle-order collapse precipitated by Scotland’s Brandon McMullen, who claimed three wickets, put Nepal on the back foot.
Karan, who came in at No.7, served as the crisis manager, forming a key 60-run combination with Gulsan Jha, who hit a 30-ball 42. Following Jha’s departure in the 46th over, Karan kept the score going by playing the majority of the deliveries.
The equation came down to five runs from the last three balls. Karan hit two doubles before the penultimate delivery. With only one run needed from the penultimate delivery, Scotland’s left-arm spinner Mark Watt bowled around the wicket and targeted Karan’s pads.
However, the delivery missed the batter’s flick attempt, and keeper Matthew Cross retrieved it after a fumble, breaking the stumps. While Scotland rejoiced, believing they had bowled out Nepal and forced a Super Over. However, the umpire called it a wide, despite Karan KC’s half-celebration and raised bat. Following this, fans rushed onto the pitch, climbing over barriers, waving flags, hugging players and carrying Karan onto their shoulders.
