On Monday, the Netherlands defeated Nepal in an exciting game at Glasgow’s Titwood Ground, making it the first men’s limited-overs match to contain three Super Overs.
After posting 152/7 in their allotted 20 overs, the Dutch appeared to be in an excellent position in the match. Ben Fletcher and Kyle Klein took early wickets, putting pressure on Nepal. However, the Rohit Paudel-led team rallied with great performances from Kushal Bhurtel (34) and skipper Paudel (48).
Daniel Doram’s four-over session, in which he conceded 14 runs and took three wickets, kept the team in the game. With 56 runs needed from the final five overs, Rupesh Singh and Paudel led the chase till the 20th over. With 16 needed in the final over, tailender Nandan Yadav hit Klein for 15 runs to draw the game and force the first Super Over.
Super Over 1:
Nepal batted first and Bhurtel smashed him for two sixes and a four, piling on 19 runs. While it looked enough to defend the 20-run target, Netherlands’ Michael Levitt began with a six first ball before Max O’Dowd finished the job with a six and a boundary off the last two balls to level it again and send the match into a second Super Over.
Super Over 2:
This time, the Netherlands batted first and managed 17 runs. O’Dowd and skipper Scott Edwards posted yet another tough target. But Nepal’s skipper Rohit Paudel opened with a huge six, and Dipendra Singh Airee followed with a four. With seven needed off the final ball, Airee hit Klein’s for another six, taking the game to a third and historic Super Over.
Super Over 3:
The third Super Over finally saw a clear winner as Zach Lion-Cachet took the ball for the Dutch and produced a brilliant over. He dismissed both Paudel and Rupesh Singh without conceding a run. With just one run needed for victory, Levitt smashed Sandeep Lamichhane’s first ball for a six to end the thrilling contest.
This was only the second time in men’s T20I history that a game went into a second Super Over, and the first time into a third. Zach Lion-Cachet was named the Player of the Match for his solid over.
